Kuching, the capital city of Sarawak, Malaysia, will host the 3rd BIMP-EAGA TVET Conference 2023 on March 8 to 9 at the Pullman Hotel. It is jointly organized by BIMP-EAGA, Sarawak state’s Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD), and Sarawak Skills, a training and education provider supported by the state government. The conference will be officiated by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
Human capital is BIMP-EAGA’s most important asset. One of the strategic priorities of the subregion is to strengthen partnerships among technical vocational education and training (TVET) and higher education institutions (HEI) to improve competencies and share innovation and technology.
The TVET conference serves as a platform for developing institutional partnerships and networks, which will help ensure that the skills developed meet the needs of industries and support the sustainable development of the subregion.
The theme of the 2-day conference is “TVET to Drive Innovation and Talent Development.” Its four sub-themes are Innovation and Technology, Human Resource Management and the Way Forward, Green TVET, and Strengthening Partnerships among BIMP-EAGA TVET and HEIs.
The theme of the conference is timely. Digital transformation is reshaping jobs in the region. A new study from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and LinkedIn says employers in Asia and the Pacific want new hires to have higher digital skills, like digital design, data analytics, data science, machine learning, and programming. The region needs to retool its education systems to meet growing demand for digital literacy.
At the BIMP-EAGA conference, speakers from the academe, industry, and government will talk about the changing job landscape amid emerging and disruptive technologies. TVET practitioners will have the opportunity to share best practices, learn how to transform their TVET curricula to produce future-ready graduates, and explore and strengthen collaborations.
