Paskong Pinoy: Pistang Pinoy in Brunei Darussalam Celebrates Filipino Culture

Paskong Pinoy, also known as Pistang Pinoy, is a festive celebration that brings together the Filipino community in Brunei Darussalam to commemorate the spirit of Christmas as well as showcase the rich cultural heritage of the Philippines. The annual event, was held in collaboration with the Philippine Embassy, transforming the embassy grounds into a vibrant and lively venue, where Filipino traditions, cuisine, and performances take centre stage. The 2023 edition of Paskong Pinoy was scheduled in the 18th and 19th of November and promised to be a two-day extravaganza of festivities.

The heart of the celebration is set at the Philippine Embassy grounds in Brunei Darussalam. This picturesque venue provided the perfect backdrop for a cultural fiesta, with its open spaces of decorations, and a welcoming atmosphere that reflects the warmth and hospitality of the Filipino citizenry. The embassy grounds became a hub of activity during Paskong Pinoy, inviting everyone nearby the area to partake in the joyous celebrations.

Paskong Pinoy is a collaborative effort between the Filipino community in Brunei Darussalam and the Philippine Embassy. This partnership aims to strengthen the ties between the two communities and promote the rich cultural heritage of the Philippines. The organizers work tirelessly to ensure that the event captures the essence of Paskong Pinoy, creating an experience that resonates with both Filipino and the local community of Brunei Darussalam.

The two-day celebration is packed with a diverse range of activities that showcased the best of what the Filipino culture has to offer. Attendees can expect traditional Filipino performances, including folk dances, music, and theatrical presentations that highlights the country’s eccentric traditions. The event is not just a feast for the senses but also a feast for the stomach, as Paskong Pinoy features a food bazaar offering a vast array of Filipino delicacies and specialties.

Furthermore, Paskong Pinoy served itself as a platform for local Filipino businesses to display their products and services. From handmade crafts to traditional garments, the event provided a marketplace that promoted entrepreneurship within the Filipino community in Brunei Darussalam.

Here are the festivities of Paskong Pinoy through a variety of programs organized:

  1. Paskong Pinoy Parade: Kicked off the celebration with a lively and colourful procession, capturing the essence of Filipino culture as participants in traditional attire weave through the embassy grounds.
  2. Filipino Food and Products Bazaar: The diverse flavours from the Philippines at the Bazaar offers a delectable journey through Filipino delicacies and traditional products.
  3. Children’s Christmas Program: Tailored for the young ones, the Children’s Christmas Program promises interactive and entertaining activities, ensuring the atmosphere of the season is experienced in a memorable way.
  4. Christmas and Music Band Concert: Following the festive tunes of the Christmas and Music Band Concert, featuring live performances of traditional Filipino music, classic Christmas carols, and contemporary hits.
  5. Various Games Program: Engaging a range of games for all ages, from traditional Filipino games to holiday-themed activities.

Paskong Pinoy is not only a celebration within the Filipino community but also an opportunity for cultural exchange. The event invites members of the local community to join in the festivities, fostering a sense of unity and understanding between different cultures. Through showcasing cultural traditions, music, and cuisine, Paskong Pinoy becomes a bridge that connects the Filipino community with their friends and neighbours in Brunei Darussalam. – Nurul Hanizah
