Social enterprise Kilang ReRoot launched The Balkony Project at Pusat Belia in the capital last Sunday.
The project aims to promote awareness and involvement in the circular economy, urban agriculture and food security.
Founder and Managing Director Siti Jaafar expressed her hopes at the launching ceremony that the project could inspire more people into taking action and promote sustainable food production and reduce its environmental impacts.
“We believe that empowering individuals to grow their own food is one small but significant step in the right direction,” she said.
Over the next eight months, 34 individuals aged 16-64 will learn about farming, agricultural practices, and woodworking, get mentorship from experts in agriculture, and grow their own gardens.
Participants will also be taught ways to optimise small spaces in their homes to grow produce.
The project is expected to run from March to September, with a closing showcase of products by participants planned for October this year.
The Balkony Project is one of 142 projects to receive the Alumni Engagement Innovation Fund from the US Mission to ASEAN.
“This grant is very competitive and marks the first time that a Bruneian alumna has received AEIF funding,” said Jeff Barrus, Public Affairs Officer at the U.S. Embassy in Bandar Seri Begawan.
